A Glimpse Into Our Issue
SMEs and microcap companies in India represent an untapped market segment, often overlooked and under-researched. This sector is frequently misunderstood as risky or volatile, largely due to a lack of comprehensive coverage and information. However, the reality of SMEs is far more promising and diverse than commonly perceived.
Despite their nascent stage and lesser-known promoters, SMEs are not uniformly high-risk ventures. In fact, they are a burgeoning segment of the market, with over ~370 companies listed on the NSE SME platform alone. These enterprises have collectively raised a significant amount till now – ~Rs. 7100 crores – through primary issues, reflecting both investor confidence and the sector's growth potential. The average fundraising amount stands at Rs. 19 crores, contributing to a total market capitalisation exceeding Rs. 85000 crores.
Further illustrating their potential, over 135 companies that initially listed on the NSE SME platform have successfully transitioned to the Mainboard. This migration underscores their growth and stability, challenging the stereotype of SMEs being merely short-term plays.
Launched in November 2017, the NSE SME platform has shown remarkable performance. As of 29th September 2023, the five-year annual return has been an impressive 42.67%, signaling strong growth and return on investment. This data highlights the opportunities present in the SME sector, making it a compelling choice for investors seeking to diversify their portfolios and explore new growth avenues.
